Beach House
Cape Cod, MA
This Cape originally built in 1952 overlooks the entrance to Red Brook Harbor in Cataumet. Our client decided to add two bedrooms and a shared bath to the unfinished attic and renovate the main level. The house originally was quite compartmentalized with two bedrooms, a shared bath and small living areas. Another unique feature was the entry was located on the side versus the center entrance typical on most Capes. The family decided on a simple resolution which took full advantage of the secluded site. Half of the main level which faces the water is living space and opens onto a fir deck, leaving the side entrance. This allows for cross ventilation and visual transparency through the building. The stair to the second floor ascends within a two-story volume with skylights above. The two new bedrooms are very gracious and extend from front to back sharing a bath with a custom bay window. What was once a dark series of rooms with only glimpses of the water has been transformed into an open and airy experience.
